SEIU ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA Nurses, childcare workers, janitors and other service workers endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president today, calling him the candidate with the best vision, best plan and best strategy to lead the country to a new American Dream.
Members of the Service Employees International Union endorsed Obama to achieve economic justice, quality, affordable healthcare for every American, the freedom for workers to unite in unions, and an end to the Iraq war.
Pauline Beck, a home health care worker in Oakland, CA, said, “Barack is the right candidate for workers. He will change our country.” Senator Obama spent a day with Beck last August, helping her care for an elderly patient and spending time with Beck’s family.
SEIU members are supporting Obama with an aggressive political effort. With more than 150,000 members in the upcoming primary states, including Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Texas, SEIU will mobilize thousands to go door-to-door, work the phones, and will send mail about their support for Obama. SEIU also will have a substantial presence on television and radio in every critical state.
“This is about more than one election. It’s about building for the next generation of America," said SEIU President Andy Stern. “Barack Obama is creating the broadest and deepest coalition of voters we’ve ever seen.”
Anna Burger, SEIU’s Secretary-Treasurer, said, “This is one of the most important presidential elections workers have faced. Families are struggling, we’re fighting two wars, and a majority of Americans are now worried that their children will be worse off than they are. Obama is the right person at the right time to lead the change we so desperately need in our country.”

March 22nd SEIU NIGHT AT THE CR ROUGH RIDERS

| SEIU MEMBER ART CONNELL HAILED AS HERO!
Not only are SEIU Local 199 Healthcare members life savers, so is Iowa City Schools custodian Art Connell. On Jan 26, his quick reaction probably saved the life of a carpenter who was working on some floors at City High School in Iowa City.
The carpenter severed an artery with a power saw. Art, without thinking about it, reacted as he had been taught in the military. Using a sweatshirt he stopped the bleeding.
Art's actions, which he self-effacingly describes as "nothing special" were featured in the Iowa Press-Citizen. Not only did Principal Mark Hanson praise Art, but Leo Morris, the injured carpenter, said that the SEIU member "was walking on angels' wings."

GOV. CULVER ACKNOWLEDGES IOWA NURSES ARE UNDERPAID!!
IN HIS CONDITION OF THE STATE ADDRESS CHET CULVER CALLED FOR A TASK FORCE TO LOOK AT WAYS TO INCREASE NURSE PAY HERE IS WHAT HE SAID:
[W]e need to address the health care needs of those who need it the most, our seniors. Let's start with the people who take care of them, our nurses. It is time to get more nurses and to pay them better.
The U.S. Department of Labor ranks Iowa as the 49th lowest paying state for registered nurses. This is unacceptable and we need to do something about it now!
So, I'm appointing a task force to meet and make recommendations by March 1st on how we can best increase nurse's pay and address the shortage.
As a former nurse, Lt. Governor Judge, is the perfect person to lead this effort, and she's agreed to do so.

SEIU LOCAL 199 ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF THE PURPLE POINTS PROGRAM!!!
Purple Points is a chance for members to get free purple stuff -- hats, jackets, neckties, you name it. All you have to do is pretty much anything and you get points. Show up to a union meeting. Recruit a new member. Sign a COPE card.
That’s all there is to it. OK, well maybe there’s a little more to it than that. But that’s pretty much the whole thing. If you get active enough, you could possibly redo your whole house in SEIU Purple…or not. It’s up to you.
Points are earned annually (from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31). They do not carry over to the following year. Points must be used that year.
Points can be redeemed once per month when the Local places an order.
Chapters for chapter meetings must submit sign-in sheets for members to get credit.
All other meetings must have a sign-in sheet in order for participants to get credit. All sign-in sheets should be emailed or faxed to the attention of Jim Jacobson, Staff Director.
The top point-getter for the year will get an additional prize.
SEE YOUR WORK SITE LEADER FOR MORE DETAILS.
