Salary Staff Nurse I
Please note that the table has changed as of June 5, 2003.
After discussion at labor-management meetings, and questions from SEIU regarding the total sum allocated for market adjustments, the hospital administration agreed to increase the amount of money spent for Staff Nurse I and II. The table below reflects that change.
GREAT NEWS! Another change happened since our labor-management meeting oF July 9, 2003. The UIHC administration announced that the $1000 inpatient incentive would be added to the top of the pay scale. This means that every nurse will see the total of his/her salary increase added to the base pay. No one will receive a bonus on December 1.
There are 2 ways to figure out salaries. Staff nurse I will receive whichever is greater. To calculate your salary as of July 2003, you will need to know:
your current base salary
your years of experience if you have 20 or less years of experience as a RN, at UIHC and/or in other settings
all salaries in tables are for 100%, if you work part-time, you will need to change the numbers according to your percentage
Step 1
Take your current base salary and add 4%
Step 2
If you have 20 years or less of experience, look at the salary that correspond to your years of experience in the chart below. Compare this number to the salary obtained in step 1, choose whichever number is greater.

Step 3
If you work in the Department of Nursing and are assigned to a unit that requires 24 hour staffing, 7 days a week, or work in the OR or PACU, add $1,000 (prorated for part-time)to the salary you obtained in step 2. This is your new salary as of July 1, 2003, it will appear in your August pay check.
The new top of scale for staff nurse I will be $51,637 (5% increase). The new top of scale for inpatient staff nurse I will be $52,637. Since the top of scale increases by 5% and the $1000, no one should receive a bonus on December 1.
It is very important to verify that the Nursing Department has the correct number of years of experience, particularly if you have had other employers beside UIHC. The hospital uses the following criteria to determine your years of experience as a RN:
Acute care: every year of full time counts as one year; part-time is prorated (years of experience are not prorated if worked at UIHC)
Non-acute care (home health, long term care, rehab, etc): every year counts as 1/2 year of experience, prorated for part-time
Years of experience are only counted as whole years. For example if you add up your experience and come up with 2 years and 8 months, you will get 2 years of experience credit
If you have any questions about how much years of experience the hospital has credited to you, call the Central Nursing Office.
Example 1
Staff nurse I working on inpatient unit with 5 years of experience as of July 1, 2003. Current salary: $39,966
Step 1: $39,966 + 4% = $41,564
Step 2: $42,550 (is greater than step 1)
Step 3: $42,550 + $1,000 = $43,550
New salary is $43,550
Example 2
Staff nurse I working in the OR with 16 years of seniority. Current salary: $49,179
Step 1: $49,179 + 4% = $51,146
Step 2: does not apply
Step 3: $51,146 + $1,000 = $52,146
New to of scale is $52,637.
New salary is $52,146
Example 3
